Mud-terrain tires are built for a maximum off-road traction performance while sacrificing some on-road traction and tread life. These often oversized tires feature aggressive tread design with big lugs for maximum traction in mud and on other rough terrains. Even if branded with Mud and Snow symbol, off-road mud-terrain tires provide moderate winter traction.

Cooper Evolution M/T is designed to tackle mud and built to withstand the challenging conditions encountered when traveling far from paved roads. The symmetric pattern of the Evolution M/T utilizes large, independent lugs and a high void ratio to power through challenging terrain. Alternating scoops in the substantial shoulder blocks forcefully dig into loose dirt, sand or mud to find traction, and "climbers" on the Trail Grip Sidewall grab onto rocks and logs while resisting damage. Mud Slingers between tread blocks help the tire clean itself to maintain grip, while Stone Barriers aid longevity by protecting the tire from sharp rocks and ejecting lodged stones. Siping of the independent tread blocks helps aid traction in slippery conditions, and the Evolution M/T is studdable for mechanical traction on ice. While Off-Road Maximum Traction tires, which are often called mud tires, are branded with the M+S symbol and able to churn through deep snow, their typical oversize applications and the limited number of snow-biting sipes in their large lugs can challenge their on-road wintertime traction on packed snow and icy surfaces.
